Growing Old is Fun!

It's said that age is nothing, but a number, but when it comes to Toastmasters, age is a big deal. Last week, Sunuppers was officially recognized by Toastmasters International on the anniversary of our 35th year as a club!

Much has transpired from the days when we were Safeway Sundowners, meeting in Bellevue on Tuesdays at 4:30. A decline in membership led to changes in our name, focus, and location. We became Sunuppers, an advanced club that met in Tukwila. Eventually, we relocated to the headquarters of Thrifty Car Rental, but apparently grew restless after eight years there.

In 2002, the conference room at Wesley Homes Administration Building in Des Moines became our place of choice, and remains so today. In all this time, Sunuppers have proven to be active all at levels of communication and leadership, from the club level on through to the International hierarchy.

Happy Anniversary to everyone who has contributed to the success of Sunuppers!

By the way, for those who track trivia, our official charter date is December 27, 1976.

In a recent study on speech, researchers analyzed the speed, pitch, and fluency of 100 interviewers and compared how effective they were in persuading people to take a survey over the phone. They found that those who spoke at "a nice comfy pace"—three-and-a-half words per second—were more persuasive than slower or very fast talkers. Those who took big pauses while speaking were always more successful than the perfectly fluent talkers.

Sunuppers Advanced Club won a $50 gift certificate in a drawing held for all clubs that turned their dues in on time at the Spring Conference - So You Think You Can Speak.

Famous Speakers Meeting and Open House - Coming Soon to a Sunuppers Meeting Near You!

You never know who you might run into when you come to a February Sunuppers meeting. On February 12th Sunuppers will hold their annual Famous Speakers Meeting and Open House where members will portray...famous people.

Last year our "special guests" included George Carlin, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Tommy Lee Jones, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Judge Judy and more! This year - who knows? If you want to be a part of the in crowd and hang out with the stars, come to this year's Famous Speakers Meeting.

We meet at Wesley Homes Administration across the street from the Des Moines City Hall and Police Department (21631 11th Avenue S, Des Moines, WA 98198).

Please come visit us as our guest and experience the Best Advanced Club on the South End and the Biggest Advanced Club in District 2!

Sherry Tuckett and The Red Light Diet took First Place at the District 2 Humorous Speech Contest yesterday afternoon. She delivered a superbly crafted speech with excellent timing and humor. She walked away with a nice plaque and a large trophy that will bear her name for eternity. Well done, Sherry!!

November Change-Up

It's November - a time of change. The time changes back to standard. Leaves change color. Elections change policies and who's in office. But most important...Sunuppers is changing their November meeting! Because the District 2 Fall Conference falls on our normal meeting day, Sunuppers is changing their meeting day and time and doing something special.

Sunuppers will hold their meeting on Saturday, November 20th at 6pm. The meeting will be at Dennis and Peggy's house: 20226 7th Ave S, Des Moines. We will start off with a potluck dinner. Peggy and Dennis are supplying barbecued ribs and we are bringing the rest.

Sunuppers were out in force! Great speeches, good food and lots of help. Our Area 41 Governor Steve Kennedy and our Division D Governor Jane Babione are both members of Sunuppers. Maybe that's why they had such great Sunupper's support!

Thanks to Theresa Frasch and Clyde Jones for their participation as speakers in the Humorous Speech and Tabletopics contest for Sunuppers. Also, Roger Wells, Darlene Burrill (3rd in Humorous Speech) and Roberta Macdonald (3rd in Tabletopics), all Sunuppers members, participated as a speakers other home clubs…although they didn’t come in first place at the contest they certainly were first place in our hearts!

Peggy Morgan coordinated the Potluck. Franni Turean was a judge. Mary Videen helped both with registration and also as a Sgt at Arms. Valerie Tims supported the event as the chief judge. Liz Northrop provided us with a wonderful inspiration. Patricia Klingler and Dean Dimick were the timers. Maria Wilson was a ballot counter.

Sunuppers thanks goes out to all of you for your wonderful help. Sunuppers is a great club with supportive members. It is truly inspirational to see this participation and to know that Sunuppers members are so integral to Area 41.

You may wonder what does Chocolate or Chocolate Woman have to do with Toastmasters? Plenty! In the year 2006 I was working on my humorous speaking skills. I was basically trying to find them. I challenged myself by beginning the journey to the District 2 humorous speech contest. Although someone else beat me out at the club level it resulted in a story that I was surprised to find had me chuckling when I read it again this morning. I found it after all these years while I was searching for something else. Yes, it is true, wonders can happen, I actually wrote a story for the fun of it.

It all started with an email from our VPM Patricia: Looking for a Theme for Sunuppers.

What inspires you about being a member of Sunuppers Advanced Toastmasters? What message comes to mind when you think about the benefits of your membership? What theme resonates for you about the greatness of our club?

Last year’s theme was Great speakers. Great Feedback. Great Fun! It defined who we were for the year. We took it with us to TLIs, Conferences, shared it at our Open House and Famous Speakers meeting, and posted it on our tri-fold advertisement we bring to events.

But new years call for new themes. And Patricia called for ideas. The emails flew back and forth until there were about 20 ideas! Then Patricia called the monkey...Survey Monkey. She posted all of our theme ideas and we each voted for our top five picks. The survey closed at 5pm on Friday the 13th. Ominous? You decide.

The top five choices were brought to the August 14th Sunuppers meeting where five people were randomly chosen to promote one of the five themes (also chosen randomly) in 30 seconds.

After the promotions, we voted on the themes. The first round of voting allowed for two votes - this helped us narrow the themes down to the top two. Then we had the final vote off. And the winner was:

Sunuppers: Speak. Lead. Succeed. Great job everyone! It's going to be a great year.

Sunuppers at the Block Party!

Sunuppers Advanced Club members Patricia, Steve and Theresa were out and about this weekend promoting all of the clubs in Area 41 at the Olde Burien Block Party. They talked to a number of people interested in hearing more about Toastmasters they had 20 interested people put their names in the drawing for one of two free introductory memberships.

Keith from Burien Breakfast gave a Table Topic question to Tim Fahey - candidate for King County Council District 8. After Patricia counted his ums he said he better join a club quick before he has to do much more public speaking.

All five clubs from Area 41 were represented at this event. A drawing will be held to give away two free memberships. Many contacts were made - Area 41 hopes to gain some new Toastmaster members wanting to improve their speaking skills.

Area 41 Has More Fun

Toastmaster and Burien resident Steve Kennedy attended the District 2 Changeover Meeting last Saturday, where he was officially granted the status of Area 41 Governor as the Toastmaster fiscal year begins July 1, 2010. Our own Waterland Blog Sales Whiz, Theresa Frasch is his trusty assistant in charge of Marketing and Public Relations.

Toastmasters International (as the name implies) is an international organization with more than 12,500 clubs in 106 countries. In order to help keep things moving along the clubs are divided into Regions, Districts, Divisions and Areas. Steve and Theresa’s Area 41 has five clubs in Burien and Des Moines.

Sunuppers' new officers attended Toastmasters Leadership Institute last Saturday. Maria, the President, Theresa, VP of Public Relations, Patricia the VP of Membership, Valerie the Treasurer, and Brian the Sergeant at Arms.

They heard inspiring keynotes by District 2 leaders and went to training sessions specifically for their offices so they will know how to serve the club better in the coming year.

Five of Sunuppers' Advanced Toastmasters Club Officers have attended training so now they have achieved the first half of Point Number 1 towards achieving their Distinguished Club status. Only nine and a half more to go and they will be President's Distinguished again!

One of our newest members, Bob Rivet, the incoming Lt. Governor of Education and Training put on the TLI. Two of Sunuppers' incoming officers were presenters at the event. Maria Wilson gave the presentation on VP Membership and Patricia Klingler gave the presentation on VP Public Relations. Jane Babione gave the presentation on the Presidents role. Sherry Tuckett and Brian Nordby were in charge of the breakfast buffet. Mike Haley helped with buffet prep, too. Valerie Tims was there to assist with the set up even though she couldn't stay for the whole event. More importantly she was responsible for creating and printing the programs and in charge of the PR for the event, including the Starburst announcements. Jane Babione headed the registration table. Many of our other members were there, too, as they hold offices in other clubs.

The Sunuppers Famous Speakers Meeting is a fun way to see Toastmasters showcase some famous people and their inspiring speeches. It's been an annual event for many years. In the past these speakers have included speeches and their period costumes such as Abraham Lincoln, General Patton, Hilary Clinton, Barack Obama, Benjamin Franklin's sister, Ghandi, Patrick Henry, Marge Simpson, Dr. Ruth, and many others. See this year's speakers, you never know who will be there.....It's always a wonderful event. Even the Evaluators and Toastmaster may turn up as a famous speaker. Guests are welcome and encouraged to come dressed as someone famous too if desired.

Sunuppers were the big winners Saturday at the District 2 Fall Conference - thanks to your prompt dues payments. All clubs that had their dues paid by 9/30/09 were entered into a drawing to be held at the conference this weekend. Ed is one of the many wonderful members of Sunuppers who we are lucky to have in our club. Besides his wonderful talent as a photographer and his dedication to helping the District last year with the Resource materials, recently, Ed has been very unselfish at sharing his findings about what makes a successful website.

Ed gave some of the best advice for websites to our Sunuppers members in preparation for his presentation at Toastmasters Leadership Institute...His advice?

Be sure to have lots of photos and information about two things on the website to attract people to read it....it's about marketing! Not just providing useful information.....the two things?

1) People Having fun!

2) People being recognized for their achievements

The Sunuppers Famous Speakers Meeting is a fun way to see Toastmasters showcase some famous people and their inspiring speeches. It's been an annual event for many years. In the past these speakers have included speeches and their period costumes such as Abraham Lincoln, General Patton, Hilary Clinton, Barack Obama, Benjamin Franklin's sister and many others. See this year's speakers, you never know who will be there..... Susan B. Anthony is on the list...it's always a wonderful event. Even the Evaluators and Toastmasters may turn up as a famous speaker. Yes, The Fall conference was one of the most memorable I have attended. We had a visit from Jana and Bob Barnhill. Jana is the current TMI President and her husband is a Past TMI President. Upcoming November meeting reflections

It's a common happening. The meeting is tomorrow and a speech is due! Ahhhggg....but the mind is a watery reflection of ideas. How do we still the waters?

How do we stop the procrastination? At Sunuppers we don't quit! We don't give up! It's like the mailman....despite hail, rain, sleet or snow...the mail must be delivered...or is it more like the theatre?....the show must go on. Yes, we all suffer the same afflictions when it comes to speech writing..although some more than others....afflictions like procrastination, denial, absent mindedness...and then it happens...that aha moment...the brilliance shines through! The words come, the project is complete and the delivery happens. For now though, for me.....the mind is but a watery reflection of ideas..waiting to be stilled and calmed. I've done research and made notes. I've spoken with others for their thoughts on my topic. It will become clear soon!!!! Ahh to possess the talents of a Barack Obama or a John F. Kennedy....the humor of George Carlin would be great.

As I said earlier, a common happening to be resolved come Saturday, November 8, at our monthly meeting....see you there!

September Toastmasters Social Roast and Toast

Hello, all,

I just realized I can post a blog to our team blogsite. This must have been how Theresa set it up....hmmmm. I think that was pretty tricky! In any case, here is a little peek at our special social meeting this year on September 21, 2008, where we Sunuppers roasted our Past President: Peggy Morgan and gave random praises to people.

Here is Peggy holding up her princess pin given to her by Sharyn as part of her roast.

Peggy let us know we needed to step up our roasting skills. We had such a great time with the food and everyone sharing funny moments. The laughing was abundant and people were smiling all evening. Dennis, Peggy's husband did a great job cooking those ribs and the excellent food which people brought by made for happy stomachs as well.

This is such a great idea...sweet praises: You've read about Sherry in 'Starburst' (our district newsletter). She has been a 'Life Saver' to D2. Never a 'Nerd' or a 'Butterfinger', She went on a 'Spree' to get things done with smiles and 'Snickers'. Completing 'Mounds' of work and being a wonderful person, Sherry Tuckett is worth '100 grand' times '100 grand' plus.

Talk about working with words!

This was our second Social Roast in the past two years.....Suffice it to say this is a tradition that we must continue! Last year we had the roast at Franni's place where we roasted Dennis! It was a great way for people to get credit in the Advanced manual which has the roast.

Meet the Stars

What do Marge Simpson and Eleanor Roosevelt have in common? How about Hillary Clinton and Wilma Rudolph? They, along with Barack Obama, will be at the Sunuppers Famous Speakers Meeting!

On the second Saturday in February many "famous" people will be arriving in Des Moines. Once a year Sunuppers Advanced Toastmaster Club holds its annual Famous Speakers Meeting where all of the speakers (and others) portray famous people. The speeches are either actual representations of a famous speech or the speaker might give a made up speech in a famous person's character. This year it will be held on February 9, 2008. Everyone is welcome to attend. You never know who you might run into! We hope we run into you!

Sunuppers Three Evaluation Methods

Why do we at Sunuppers value our evaluations so much? Because they help us grow as speakers, both when we are evaluated and when we evaluate.

Why do we evaluate?

1.To help another person become a better speaker.
2.To improve your speaking skills.

How do we improve?

1.We change our behavior-do things differently.
2.We receive feedback. The feedback is evaluation.
3.We test our behavior again and receive more feedback. That’s how we improve.
4.Evaluation is a source of information, a tool for helping us to improve. We’re the only ones that can improve ourselves as speakers.

What should every evaluator do?

1.Before their speech - What does the speaker want you to look for?
2.During their speech - What is the speaker doing that WORKS for you?
3.What could the speaker do, to make it WORK better for me?
4.Visual/Vocal/Organization/Content
5.Evaluate the speaker at his/her level.

What does it mean when I am the evaluator?

You are a:
1.Motivator – Begin with what the speaker does well.
2.Facilitator – Show the speaker how to improve. Model the behavior you want to see or the behavior you want to change.
3.Counselor – Identify the speakers potential to grow into; don’t be so hard on yourself; you’re not alone, I’ve felt that way…

Problem Solving

The one you choose depends on:

1. Your level of skill and experience as an Evaluator.

2. The skill/experience level of the Speaker.

3. The amount of time available for your evaluation.

Tell & Sell

What is it?
The evaluator discusses the speech and suggests ways the speaker can improve.

Advantages?
Brevity, effective when evaluator has more speaking experience than the speaker and is considered an authority figure by the speaker.

Disadvantages?
Can put speaker on defensive, can create personal animosities, defensiveness will not lead to improvement.

Feedback on Feedback

What is it?
The evaluator offers and appraisal and recommendations for improvement, then the speaker has a chance to respond. It’s feedback on feedback.

Advantages?
Removes defensive feelings that might damage self-esteem or prevent improvement.
Builds positive interpersonal relationships and group unity.
It helps the evaluator improve.

Disadvantages?
Takes longer, may increase nervousness (new member), can lessen impact of your recommendations.

Problem Solving

What is it?
Evaluator guides the Speaker toward making his or her own evaluation and deciding how to improve.

Four Steps to implement problem solving

* BEFORE the speech, ask the speaker specifically what their concerns are.
* AFTER the speech, identify the speaker’s strengths and problem areas by asking non-threatening questions.
* Build mutual agreement on what improvements the speaker has made, what his/her strengths are and what problems exist. (You may wish to invite other club members to participate.)
* Ask the speaker how he/she feels these problems can best be solved. Steer the speaker toward selecting actual methods for improvement.

Advantages?
By encouraging speaker to make his/her own evaluation, you are much more likely to stimulate changes in behavior that with the other two methods. It is satisfying for both parties. Most likely to achieve positive results.

Disadvantages?
Most difficult, time consuming, can be risky with an inexperienced speaker who doesn’t understand what constitutes good speaking, it lets the speaker ultimately decide how they will improve and it can stimulate changes that are different from those you might have suggested.

Ask your speaker what kind of evaluation he/she would like and then prepare accordingly.

New Speaker/Evaluator/General Evaluator Format for Meetings

The toastmaster will introduce the general evaluator when he or she introduces the meeting team. The general evaluator will stand up and introduce the evaluators.

Each evaluator will be asked to explain what his or her speaker wants to accomplish and state the amount of time they need. This should only take about 30 seconds but it will help guide the rest of the club's comments during the evaluation part of the meeting. Once the last evaluator has explained their role, the general evaluator will return control to the toastmaster.

Evaluators - please contact your speaker and find out answers to the following questions. (You can ask more than these!)

Is this a manual presentation?
If so, what are your objectives?
If not, what do you want to accomplish?
Is there a common critique from past evaluations that can be addressed in
this presentation?
What can I do to help you prepare for this presentation?
How much time do you need for this presentation?

Speakers - please write an introduction and send it to our toastmaster and bring a copy to the meeting. Use a large font that is easy to read -18 to 20 works well.

An introduction is an important part of your presentation. A good speaker always writes his or her own introduction. Use these elements - you can organize them in any order:

Who are you? (What gives you the right to be delivering this presentation? Is it your educational background, experiences, or accomplishments?)
What will you be speaking about? (What is the topic?)
Why will the presentation be important to the audience and what is in it for them?

Announced at the Spring Conference this year: Sunuppers received the Inspirational Club of the Year Award (under 2005-2006 club president Valerie Tims), Clyde Jones received Division of the Year (Huge Trohy), and Valerie Tims received Toastmaster of the Year Award (Huge Trophy). Congratulations to all!

Next Meeting

Our next meeting is our Holiday Meeting. It is a pot-luck, with a White Elephant gift exchange. Plan on the meeting going 30 minutes longer, bring a dish for breakfast, a White Elephant gift to anonymously exchange, and holiday cheer. Remember to bring a dish for breakfast, a White Elephant gift.

Please welcome our 2 newest members: Roger Wells and Charlie Peters.

Both became members as a result of our Open house earlier this month. I have added them to our Turbobase schedule in time for our next meeting on November 10. Roger indicated that he will not be able to attend in November due to a conflict. I have sent their dues and membership forms to Sharyn Solum our Treasurer.

Sunuppers Bring Home the Trophies

Sunuppers 2834 was well represented at the area 4l Table Topics and Humorous Speech contest. Congratulations to our winners: Maria Wilson, Mary Videen and Theresa Frasch (representing Soundwaves).

Maria won first place in Table Topics. The question was “If you could do one thing to change the world what would it be and how would you do it?” Maria's answer was to show kindness to everybody. This excellent answer earned her the first place trophy.

Mary took home the third place trophy for her speech titled “I Fight Crack”. Her speech was a humorous look at her misadventures tripping over cracks in the sidewalk. I was inspired by her spunk and ability to meet life’s challenges with humor. When she waved the cane around to defend herself, I could only be glad I wasn’t “crack.”

Theresa’s first place speech was titled “Retail-i-ation. We could all relate to the sometimes frustrating life of a person working with the public. The bus full of wacky passengers dropped off at the mall was great visualization. But wait! I think I have been on that bus a time or two – have you? This speech has an insightful message presented with humor.

If you have not had the chance to hear her speech you have another opportunity. Maria and Theresa will be representing Area 4l at the Division D contest Friday Oct. 5th at the ERAC building in Burien. The fun starts at 6:00 with a potluck. The speeches and Table Topics begin at 7:00 p.m.

You Are Invited to the Sunuppers Advanced Club Open House!

Learn how to develop your higher levels of communication, leadership and comprehensive evaluation skills by attending the Sunuppers Advanced Toastmasters Club Open House Meeting.

Sunuppers is unlike any club in our district.
The focus of this club is in allowing their members to deliver longer, more challenging presentations and then receive a comprehensive group evaluation of the presentation. You won’t find table topics at one of these meetings but you will use your impromptu speaking skills to give feedback during the evaluation process. Each speaker has a lead evaluator to start the evaluation process. He or she will share some thoughts about the presentation and then lead a group discussion of the presentation.

This open house isn’t all work and neither are our meetings.
We will take a break between the speaking portion of the meeting and the evaluation portion of the meeting for refreshments. You will have an opportunity to mix and mingle with other Toastmasters. Plan on asking some questions on how this club can help you grow your communication and leadership skills.

All of our members have three things in common.
1. We are all members of other toastmasters clubs.
2. We all have earned our CTM, CC or above.
3. We all strive to better ourselves.

Our club has a history of developing leaders for our district.

When and where are the meetings?

Our meetings are at 8:00am on the second Saturday of every month at the Wesley Homes Administration Building: 21631 11th Avenue S in Des Moines, WA.

How much does Sunuppers Toastmasters cost?

Dues are made up of Toastmaster International and local club dues: $33 paid every six months, in March and September. Memberships established at an interim period are on a prorated basis. In addition, all new members are charged a one time new member fee of $10.00 for a Sunuppers magnetic badge.

You must be a CTM or CC to join Sunuppers and you must belong to a home club as well.

What is the time commitment required for participation in Sunuppers Toastmasters?

The club meets once a month on the second Saturday of each month from 8:00 to 10:00 am. Attendance and participation are the cornerstones of the learning process, yet in our club we are very understanding and flexible about unexpected work conflicts which cannot be avoided. Depending on your needs you should expect to spend a minimum of 4 hours+ per month including attendance and preparation plus your participation in your home club.

Who are the members in the Sunuppers Toastmasters club?

We are a community club from a variety of different backgrounds and ages. Our members want to take their communication and leadership skills to a higher level. We accomplish that goal by using advanced evaluation techniques.

Would we have a room for our meeting and what would attending it teach? Perhaps emphasizing the Round Robin or maybe we could use the three forms of evaluation and explain them.

Emmy, will you send us an explanation of Bastille Day perhaps there is a leadership lesson in that. Everybody sometimes when you respond it triggers an idea in someone else so let the emails flow.

Our July Meeting Location

Pre Meeting Notes :

I am trying to put together a special meeting venue/forum. Here's the
skinny - Sherry, Clyde, and I are scheduled speakers. We also have a TLI
at Renton Tech that morning.

So here's the pitch - We move the meeting to the TLI and make it part
of the meeting. I know Sunuppers are creative enough to manage it. But we
need to make a plan and follow through. So how about a e-mail brainstorming
agenda building? I'll call Ralph and talk to him about it. I called Emmy and
left a message on her Cell phone.

Sunuppers Sumer Party

Our summer party will be held July 21, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Franni's house. The club will sponsor the main BBQ fare: meat & fish. The remaining dishes will be pot luck, and BYOB. Look for an email list for contributions soon. Emmy will be organizing our agenda, including a “Roast” presentation.

June 9th Sunuppers Meeting

Theresa was our toastmaster for the meeting. Her theme was ‘Oh What a Sight!’ and she used it throughout the meeting.
There were three presentations today:

Speaker #1: Dennis “The Proof is in the Pudding” This was his final report for completing his High Performance Leadership Project, for the Advanced Leadership Award. He discussed the spring conference he chaired and the wonderful results his team achieved.

His lead evaluator was Mary . She gave him some feedback on improving his hand gestures. A few members wanted to hear more about the budget and the process his team used to achieve their results.

Speaker #2: Liz “It’s in My Blood!” This presentation was the: Ice Breaker from the Communication manual. Liz shared how her mother and father were wonderful storytellers.

Her lead evaluator was DeAnna. She talked about the importance of using stronger eye contact to help make the stories more powerful.

Speaker #3: Maria “Elevator Speeches with Executives” #1 Public Relations Manual. Maria guided us through a process for developing fast sound bites when we meet people in management.

Her lead evaluator was Emmy who rejoined our club. Welcome back Emmy! . She pointed out that this was a presentation that needed more time. There was an exercise that would have driven home the points of the presentation but there wasn’t enough time to complete it.

Our refreshments were provided by: Franni, Maria & Clyde.

Our business meeting was run by Franni, Secretary, for Valerie, President. She pulled together a slate of officers for next year and had the club vote of them. Our Area 41 Governor, Theresa installed them with fun and class!
